ENG
An excellent programme note written by Philippe Albèra
is readable online on the IRCAM website
(in French): brahms.ircam.fr/works/work/10864/
The unusual line-up of Nachtmusik I brings together three instrumental families arranged in a semi-circle: the viola and cello face the English horn and trombone; the bass clarinet is placed in the centre. The result is a very particular sound, leaning towards mid-bass and bass.
[...]
From a structural point of view, each section of Nachtmusik I is based on a dominant interval, which remains within a fixed range. Nunes has also restricted himself to eight different heights, thus eliminating the four main sounds from his previous works.
[...]
The listener in Nachtmusik I is guided less by a melodic design or a formal plan than by the deeply intense and very rich activity that takes place within the sound phenomenon itself, evoking the influence of Stimmung's Stockhausen.
[...]
Some moments are stretched out, others rushed; the tempo changes constantly. [...] We can hardly speak of fluidity, but rather of an interlocking of different layers, as if the music was carving its way through the resistance of the fabric.
[...]
The whole work evokes a rethinking of romanticism, as suggested by its title, with a central role for the figures of Schubert and Mahler, explicitly mentioned in Nunes’ previous work, Ruf. The work is therefore as much a path of discovery as of memory.
[...]
When the English horn emerges from the harmonic halo towards the end, we have the feeling that a long-desired new dawn is finally rising.

NL
Een uitstekende programmanotitie geschreven door Philippe Albèra
is online leesbaar op de IRCAM website
(in het Frans): brahms.ircam.fr/works/work/10864/

(Ph. A.)

FR
brahms.ircam.fr/works/work/10864/
» (Ph. A.)
